John M. Keane

John M. Keane, nacido en Los Ángeles en 1965, comenzó su carrera muy jóven: con sólo once años formó el dúo The Keane Brothers junto a su hermano mayor Tom, y en 1977 publicaron su primer single, ‘Sherry’. Más tarde se convirtieron en los artistas más jóvenes de la historia en presentar su propio programa de televisión de variedades, The Keane Brothers Show.

Después de la separación del grupo, John se estableció por su cuenta y demostró sus habilidades como letrista publicando su primer álbum en solitario, ‘Any other world’, en 1996, seguido de ‘Straight away’ en 1999. Desde entonces, ha construido una sólida carrera como compositor, músico (con un gusto especial por la música clásica, el R&B, el pop y el country), letrista y músico de estudio, colaborando como batería con Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Chicago y Richard Marx, entre otros.

Entonces, ¿qué hace John M. Keane en este blog?

La razón es de peso: como compositor, John M. Keane es responsable del innovador sonido de la serie de éxito mundial CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, por el que fue nominado al premio Emmy en 2007 así como a 12 premios BMI y ASCAP durante los años que se ha estado emitiendo.

El apartado musical de CSI: Crime Scene Investigation recae, principalmente, en una cuidada selección de canciones que reúne clásicos del rock (no en vano los títulos iniciales se acompañan del ‘Who are you’ de The who) con ejemplos de las nuevas tendencias y rock alternativo contemporáneo (Grand Theft Audio o Robbie Robertson). Construir un underscore que pueda destacar en estas circunstancias parece una tarea imposible de la que, sin embargo, Keane sale victorioso.

Si los personajes protagonistas (recuérdese, el turno de noche) se mueven entre los ambientes urbanos de Las Vegas (barrios residenciales, callejones sórdidos y provocadores casinos) y el aséptico laboratorio, la música de Keane se mueve también en esos parámetros de elegancia, oscuridad y frialdad. En ocasiones, suaves loops de percusión electrónica sostienen sonidos de cuerda sintética que arrastran tras de sí melancolía y tristeza; en otras, un ritmo más rápido quiere transmitir el pulso acelerado de la investigacións. Son piezas siempre a medio camino entre melodías sencillas y puro sound design ambiental. Con una paleta sonora minimalista en la que tienen mucho peso los sintetizadores virtuales de Spectrasonics, Keane ha perfilado un sonido reconocible, potente, heredero del creado por Mark Snow para The X-Files pero con personalidad propia y que, al igual que la propia serie, ha generado toda una corriente de seguidores e imitadores.

Considerando el peso que las canciones tienen en la serie, no es ninguna sorpresa que la edición discográfica de la banda sonora de CSI: Crime Scene Investigation sólo incluya dos cortes de underscore: Investigation suite y Grissom’s overture. No obstante, son piezas suficientemente representativas del trabajo de este músico versátil y sorprendente.

John M. Keane, born in Los Angeles in 1965, started his career very young: at only eleven years old, he made up the popular duo The Keane Brothers, together with his older brother Tom, and in 1977 the released their first single, ‘Sherry’. Later, they became the youngest entertainers in history to host their own variety television program, The Keane Brothers Show.

After the group disbanded, John set out on his own and showcased his skills as songwriter, releasing his first solo-album, ‘Any other world’, in 1996, followed by ‘Straight away’ three years later. Since then, he has stablished a solid career as composer, musician (with a special taste for classic, R&B, pop and country), songwriter and studio musician, playing as session drummer along with Céline Dion, Michael Bolton, Chicago and Richard Marx, among others.

There’s a heavy reason: as composer, John M. Keane is responsible for the innovative sound of the world hit series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, for which he received an Emmy Award nomination in 2007 and twelve BMI and ASCAP Award nominations during the years the show has been on air.

Although building an underscore that could stand out seems an impossible task, Keane succeed.

If the starring characters (remember, the night shift) move between Las Vegas’ urban environment (suburbs, sordid alleys and provocative casinos) and the aseptic lab, the music by Keane moves along those parametres of elegance, darkness and coldness. Sometimes, soft loops of electronic drums sustains synthetic strings carrying melancholy and sadness behind them; other times, a faster rythm transmits the accelerated pulse of the investigation. They’re pieces always stuck between simplicity and pure ambient sound design. With a minimal sound palette that makes extensive use of Spectrasonic’s virtual synths, Keane has stablished a recognizable sound, powerful, heir to that of Mark Snow for The X-Files series, but with its own personality and, like the show itself, has created a whole trend of followers and imitators.

Considering the weight of the songs in the series, it’s no surprise that the edition on album of the soundtrack includes only two themes of underscore: Investigation Suite and Grissom’s overture. However, those are representative enough of the work of this versatile and surprising musician.
